The Songs That Live in Art

There’s a question I think tells you more about an artist, writer, poet, painter, sculptor or even photographer, than almost anything else: What music do you listen to while you create?

Because music doesn’t just fill the silence. It sets the tone. It seeps into your work, bringing color choices, pacing, and mood. It becomes part of the work, even if you never see it. A lot of times you can't explain your choice; it just has the vibes. You have to find a playlist, a singer, a genre that brings a warmth and depth that feels like storytelling through sound. Songs that sit with you while you work. You want to create a rhythm that makes it easier to slow down, breathe, and let the art unfold naturally.

Yeah, song choices can change by mood or the day. But there are generally two voices that resonate with me throughout my work. Ones that help the creativity flow and makes the studio feel more alive. Any guesses on who they are?

I truly believe that if you want to understand an artist’s inspiration, their values, and the vibe behind their work, you don’t just look at the finished piece, you ask what they listen to while making it. Music reveals what moves us, what steadies us, and what we’re trying to translate into another form.

So, if you ever wonder why my art feels a little soulful, a little earthy, a little nostalgic, it might just be the music echoing through the brushstrokes. Next time you view someone's art or handmade piece, imagine the soundtrack behind it. Chances are, it’s telling part of the story too. And if you don't like music or don't listen to music... that itself, is a whole other ordeal.
